Richard L. Lipman, B.S., M.D., has lived in Miami, Florida for the past 35 years. He has four children and four grandchildren. Dr. Lipman received a degree in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received an M.D. in 1966 from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society as one of the top five members of his medical class. Dr. Lipman did his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Hospitals. Further postgraduate training included a two-year fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Miami School of Medicine–Jackson Memorial Hospital. While at the University of Miami, he authored and coauthored 15 publications in metabolism in the areas of glucose and growth hormone metabolism. Dr. Lipman also spent two years at the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, where he was Assistant Chief of Endocrinology, and was staff member of the Endocrinology Division at the USAF Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. While in the Air Force, Dr. Lipman authored six publications on the effects of prolonged weightlessness on glucose and protein metabolism. Dr. Lipman is a staff member of Larkin and Cedars Hospital in Miami, a charter member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and a member of the American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Bariatric Physicians
Dr. Lipman is board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in endocrinology and metabolism.
Following his Air Force assignments, Dr. Lipman began his private practice in endocrinology and metabolism in Miami, Florida. For the past 20 years, he has limited his endocrinology practice to the treatment of obesity and metabolism-related problems and has treated over 20,000 individuals.He has helped them lose
hundreds of pounds over the years.
For the the past seven years, Dr. Lipman has closely followed a group of his patients who have lost significant weight and kept their weight off for a minimum of two years. This group consists of 375 formerly obese patients lost an average of 22 pounds (range between 18 to 120 pounds) and kept their weight off for an average of 3 ½ years. (range is 2 years to 7 years. His objective is to uncover the factors responsible for their success and apply these factors to other patients struggling to lose weight This is one of the largest on- going study of successful weight loss maintainers that have been treated by a single physician on a one to one basis over an extended period of time reported in the medical literature. (All most all other studies of weight loss maintainers involve groups of physicians, who have not personally treated the subjects and who have obtained their information retrospectively from questionnaires submitted by the subjects after they have lost the weight). The results were published in April 2007 in the Journal of the American Bariatric Association.
Dr Lipman gives seminars in weight management at local hospitals and to employee groups of local businesses. He also participated in a series of interviews on a local Comcast cable television channel. Dr. Lipman currently lives with his wife in Miami, Florida
